AIESEC Internship in Japan: A Series of Unfortunate/Fortunate Events
January 29, 2017
Hi, so after 5 months of waiting, my AIESEC internship in Japan is finally realized!
Originally, my internship starts January 16, 2017, which means that I have to be in Japan a few days before that. However, due to a series of unfortunate events, I was still in the Philippines on the day when my internship was supposed to start. I flew to Manila from Davao on the night of January 14 and arrived January 15. My flight from Manila to Japan was scheduled for the morning of the 15th BUT I was offloaded because I did not have a return ticket which I did not buy because it will be provided by the company I am interning for. Apparently, even if my visa is not “temporary visitor” or “tourist” but “trainee”, the Philippine immigration treats it as “temporary visitor” or “tourist” for reasons unknown to the human race. And when your visa is “temporary visitor” or treated as one, you have to buy a return ticket so that they can make sure you go back to your beloved country called the Philippines after the trip. Until now, I still do not get why a trainee visa is treated as a tourist visa. If you are reading this and you know, enlighten me. So because of that, my plane flew without me. Goodbye.
If you think that the horror story ends there, wrong; because the horror story is just about to start with that plane flying without me as the opening scene. I had to re-book my flight and buy a return ticket so I checked on the schedule of the airline and to my shock, they only fly to Narita once a day which means that if I want to just re-book my flight and fly with the same airline, I have to wait for 24 hours. That is problem number one. Number two is that I have no peso to buy plane tickets. I have yen and I could just exchange it but if I do, what money would I use in Japan? The solution? Call mommy. I called mom to send me money and she said she would send me some. Problem number three. The airline I booked my flight with would not allow debit card payment so I had to pay in cash. But the thing is, I don’t have the physical debit card so I could not withdraw and there are no remittance centers in the airport so fuck me hard. Thank God BDO find ways so I got my money thru them. So after buying the tickets, I had to wait for my plane which will not come until the next day. I stayed in the airport, I roamed around the airport for 24 hours. I feel like I memorized the whole floor plan of the airport and I could tell you where is what with my eyes closed.
After waiting for my plane to come and not sleeping for 32 hours, I finally was able to board the plane and fly to Japan. I settled in and started my first day of the job the next day. After a week of doing my job, the weekends finally came. However, I was forced to move out of where I live temporarily and stay in the hotel for 4 days because the kid in the house had influenza and the mom does not want me to catch the flu. On the way to the hotel, I lost my phone. That is horror story number I don't know anymore. We reported it to the police and hoped that a kind Japanese has picked it up and returned it to the police. I have heard and read so many stories of things getting returned to their owners after being lost in Japan but a week has already passed since I lost my phone and no call from the police has come in yet. I already gave up on the idea of finding it ever again. It is not coming back to me. It's gone for good.
I have experienced so many unfortunate events since I came here in Japan. The stress at work, the language problem, the new environment, the new people, the way people think and act, the feeling of being left out and being different, the very crowded train rides and the things mentioned above, shook me a bit. It got me tired and stressed. However, it allowed me to realize how much people care about me and how kind people in Japan and home are. I got a lot of kind and encouraging messages from my teachers and friends, I got help from people in Japan, and I got support from people I love and people who love me. I might have complained, teared up, got stressed and tired for while because of my situation but it also made me grow and allowed me to learn so many lessons. Although my AIESEC internship started in a "not so" good way, I still won't say that the whole internship will be shit. I believe that it will be a very good experience. It will be a very good chance for me to grow as a person, learn lessons, evaluate myself, change myself and be a better person. I believe that after this AIESEC internship, I will be a better version of me. I still have 4 weeks left of this internship and I hope that the coming weeks will be good. I know that there will be bigger challenges that will come my way but I also believe that I will win over those challenges. Fighting!
